Working Together
Abbey Garden Friends is a community group which works in partnership with West Suffolk Council and other stakeholders to help keep the Abbey Gardens a place where everyone can visit, enjoy and feel welcome.
About 1.1 million people visit the Gardens every year making it one of the most frequented free attractions in England. The Gardens have something for everyone - walks, floral displays, open spaces, children’s play area, wildflower maze, an aviary, garden café, sensory garden and a mature arboretum spread across all 16 acres.
All of this is intermingled with the historic ruins of St Edmundsbury Abbey and the riverside of the Lark. The Gardens also boast the most modern public loos in Bury St Edmunds!
As a member of Abbey Garden Friends, you would be making a small but valued contribution to help us keep the Abbey Gardens, the green jewel in the heart of Bury, a joy to visit.
We always welcome new members to support our work and membership offers several benefits.
The benefits of membership are:

Members receive a quarterly newsletter. The newsletter gives details of the developments in the Abbey Gardens, reports and pictures of events organised for members, details of forthcoming members’ events, and often a quiz.

A Summer Reception is held for members in the Abbey Gardens. At this Reception we recognise and celebrate the work done by all our volunteers and Abbey Gardens staff, as well as enjoying refreshments.

“Walk and Talk” tours of the Abbey Gardens are held from time to time, conducted usually by a Committee member and the Parks Manager. These tours provide expert information about the layout, plants and trees in the Abbey Gardens and are open to members.

Visits and outings to places of [horticultural] interest are occasionally organised for members.

Members have a “warm glow” from knowing that they are supporting the work and development of the Abbey Gardens

All this for £7 a year, or to put it another way - less than 2p per day.
We have a volunteer gardener group. The number of volunteer gardeners is restricted by insurance requirements. If you are interested in applying to become accepted as a volunteer gardener please use the contact form in the Contact Us/Location section of the site.
